Family Literacy Night

Mrs. Anderson would like to thank everyone who helped make Family Literacy Night a great success. Over 20 families turned out, with about 75 in attendance, from new babies to grandparents. The evening was sponsored by the Highlander Reading Council.

All students who attended received a brand new paperback book of their choice, and several won puzzles and games in the drawings. Parents were presented with a package of information and learning supplies. The digital camera door prize was won by Amber Brandt.

Thanks to the following: LulaMae Lake, Sherry Valure, Marian Bender, and Gene Bender helped with set up. Sylvia Simmons took care of registering, selling chances, and giving out packets. LulaMae and Pam Lake made dream catchers with the students, Casey Chapman supervised the quilt square activity, Brittany Parks led Native American games, Mary Myers directed picture writing, Jackie Chipps narrated several legends, and Kennetha Howes and assisted with the projector and supervised the bounce house.

The highlight of the evening came when Rodger White brought out a family heirloom to show the group, a collection of Native American arrowheads, tomahawks, and other implements collected by his great grandfather in upstate New York over 100 years ago. Special thanks, Rodger, for a wonderful show and tell!
